Abbas saves the day with another century

HIGHFLYING Knypersley 1st X1 were frustrated

at home on Saturday by an unambitious

Leek side.

Victory was a virtual impossibility for

Knypersley after Leek left their declaration

until the 58th over.

They had scored 267 for six, professional

Kim Barnett hitting 120 and number three

Dave Wheeldon scoring 111.

Knypersley replied with 206 for six off 49

overs, and each side picked up eight points

from the draw.

The result saw Knypersley slip one place to

third in the table, seven points behind Porthill

Park.

Barnett and Wheeldon put on 214 for the

second wicket, which fell five overs before the

end of the innings.

Leek scored 124 in their first 35 overs, and

92 in the next 15.

Neil Dutton took three for 78 off 14 overs,

Steve Farr ended with one for 23 off nine, and

Quasar Abbas took one for 55 off 17.

Knypersley made a poor start in reply, being

45 for four before Abbas steadied the ship

with a game-saving 101.

In his first 50 balls he scored just 14, the

next 68 deliveries producing 86 runs.

He and Rob James, who scored 38, hit 109

for the fifth wicket.

Danny Wilde, aged 16, from Biddulph, hit

20 as one of the opening bats in his second

first team appearance.

Knypersley travel to fourth from bottom

Moddershall tomorrow, and take on Wood

Lane on Sunday in the Talbot Cup semi-final.
