The Old Hall Hotel, Sandbach

DATING back from 1656, the Old Hall Hotel has been rated one of the most haunted buildings in Britain.

The hotel, in Sandbach, Cheshire, stands on the site of a manor house that burnt down. Several psychic groups have spent time at the hotel and it has been the subject of an investigation by Living TV's Most Haunted team.

It is believed that several ghosts wander the halls of the 17th century building but the most haunted bedroom is Room 11.

Guests brave enough to try and sleep in this room have reported jumping up in the early hours of the morning after feeling like the bed was on fire. It is thought that this haunting dates back to the time when the former manor house burned down.

The ghost of a 90-year-old lady has been spotted in the chair by the bed. She died of a heart attack more than 200 years ago in Room 11 and now moves objects around during the night.

Also seen in Room 11 are the ghosts of two young prostitutes. Aged between 12 and 13, these spirits are mischievous and can also be seen running and giggling through the building. One chef fled the hotel after the girls terrified him by re-arranging his knives in the kitchen.

Another apparition is the Grey Lady. When panelling for the hotel was taken from nearby Haslington Hall the skeleton of a baby was discovered. Since the panelling was moved, the Grey Lady has been seen wandering around the hotel, as if searching for something.

In the lounge lots of orbs and light anomalies have been spotted around the Jacobean fireplace where there is a priest hole. Although the priests managed to hide from soldiers there, they often burnt to death in the hole.

The hall's original owner, Sir John Radcliffe, has also appeared right in front of people. He likes to give guests a bit of a scare by rattling door latches and pint glasses.

And seen wandering from the front door to the stairs is one of the hotel's most famous ghosts the Bee Keeper. This elderly lady is dressed as a bee keeper and is not concerned by the presence of people in the hall.

If you're brave enough, you can find out how to stay at the Old Hall Hotel by visiting their website at www.theoldhallhotel.com.
